YOUNG WASHINGTON Is (Shockingly) a Triumph |Review


Newcomer William Franklyn-Miller shines as young George Washington in Angel Studios’ surprisingly solid biopic of the first American president.


Although studios known primarily for “faith-based” films have made significant strides in recent years, most efforts have remained bogged down by mediocre acting, “cheap” film quality, and, worst of all, heavy-handed dialogue that places message over art and entertainment. 

Consequently, I entered the theater on July 4th cautiously optimistic, hoping against hope that Young Washington, Angel Studios’ biopic of the first U.S. president, might be an exception. After all, the trailers looked impressive. But it wouldn’t be the first time I was drawn in by a similar trailer, only to walk out of the theater kicking myself for spending 8 bucks on the 10 a.m. matinee, plus gas, instead of just waiting for the film to hit streaming.

Young Washington, however, shattered my wildest expectations, mostly avoiding the pitfalls that have plagued many films of similar ilk.
