Inside the Record:

“From writing to release, this album took 20 years to make. Over those two decades, one semi-passable attempt by a 17-year-old aspiring songwriter to capture the mindset of a washed up troubadour was joined by nine other tracks. Forged in real-life hardship and creative frustration, the songs form a semi-autobiographical tale of life imitating art and back again. Sonically, it’s raw, organic, and authentic, and there’s not a word in it that isn’t true to my experiences, in essence, if not in reality—a first of my career.

Not only could I write a book on these songs but I actually did. It’s a 100% ‘true fiction’ novella that I hope to publish one day sooner rather than later, and when it arrives, I’ll let it do most of the talking.” - Cole, 05/05/25

Inside the Record:

“Since Redux, I had continued to get better at mixing, so, for the 10th anniversary of Unfiltered, I once again re-mixed its five main tracks and added a tweaked ‘Christmas Alone’ and a full band version of ‘Simple Things,’ both songs that were written and originally recorded during the Unfiltered sessions. This album contains the best sounding versions of the tracks and most closely matches my original vision for each song. It is, at this time, the definitive version, and I have no intention of re-releasing the original mixes, which I pulled from all outlets in 2016. Call me ’George Lucas,’ if you want.” - Cole, 05/05/25

Inside the Record:

“A few months after Thanks for the Broken Heart’s release, I had become unhappy with the final result because 1) the songs were not ultimately what I had envisioned when we started production and 2) the record didn’t perform as well as I had hoped. I had already played around with alternate versions of five of the tracks on my second album, Unfiltered, but they were really just there to fill out the record with a full set of songs.

For Thanks for the Broken Heart’s 10th anniversary, I decided I wanted to make a definitive version of the record which would restore my original vision for the songs as much as possible using the resources I had available at the time.

The result was Deca, a project that merged tracking from my original teenage demos and the original Thanks for the Broken Heart and Unfiltered sessions with new overdubs. These are the definitive versions of these songs for sure.

Yet, five years later, I’m sitting here thinking that the mixes could be improved further. I’m not going to touch them though. I’m just going to let them ride for now, and instead, for the original album’s 15th anniversary, I think I’m finally going to re-release the original versions side-by-side with these, plus a few bonus tracks.” - Cole, 05/05/25
