Hot Take: Why DRACULA (1979) Might Be the GOAT (Review)

I am a huge fan of monster movies. And I mean all kinds of monsters. Jaws. Godzilla. Alien. But my favorites are the classic horror monsters: Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and of course, arguably the greatest of them all, Dracula.

Every year, my household embarks on a Halloween movie marathon. Traditionally, it’s been the entire month of October; this year, we started the first week of September in a bid to cram in as many films as possible. We’ve always included the original Bela Lugosi Dracula, and a couple of years ago, we began adding Hammer Studios’ Horror of Dracula (titled simply Dracula in the UK) with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, another excellent version that I loved as a child.

This year, I noticed an under-the-radar and, in my opinion, underrated adaptation was available to stream on Peacock: 1979’s Dracula, a film adaptation of a Dracula stage production, starring Frank Langella in the title role and Sir Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing….
