
While some fans may herald Infinity War as the better film, as a 20-plus-movie saga capper, Avengers: Endgame is hard to criticize, even with all its time-travel plot holes. So, of course, it makes sense for Marvel to re-release the film ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, a cinematic event apparently designed to merge the best of the controversial Multiverse Saga while ditching the worst and setting up the cinematic universe for its next big saga.
And had Avengers: Endgame been billed as merely a re-release, it could have made for a pleasant enough outing on a weekend afternoon in September, curbing the Marvel-hero hunger pangs until Doomsday arrives in December. But the film was touted as something more. A new cut with all-new footage — essential viewing ahead of Doomsday.
I am afraid to report the experience falls far short of the hype.
A New Ending [MAJOR SPOILERS]
The first new scene arrives at the very end of the film. In the original cut of Endgame, time-traveling Steve Rogers slow dances with Peggy Carter back in 1940-something, before the film fades to black and credits roll.
This time, instead of fading to black and rolling credits, the camera cuts to an angle above Steve and Peggy. A knock sounds at the door. Steve hides behind a wall while Peggy moves to answer the door….
